Protect Your Identity

• Place your Social Security number only on documents that require it. Do not record the number on anything in your wallet or purse.
• Never leave your purse or wallet in an unattended vehicle.
• Do not give out financial information over the phone unless you initiated the call and you know the recipient.
• Be careful when sending financial information via the Internet, use only secure sites.
• Promptly remove mail from your mailbox and deposit outgoing mail that contains account numbers in secured mail drops or at the post office.
• When you are ready to discard them, shred documents such as checks, applications, and statements that contain account information.
• Check bank and credit card statements every month for accuracy.
• Review your credit report at least once a year.

If Identity Theft Happens to You

• Call your credit card issuers immediately to have the following done:
  (1) Protect your account access;
  (2) Stop payments on missing checks;
  (3) Change PINs and passwords;
  (4) Close compromised accounts, and
  (5) Open a new account

• If necessary, write letters to have any fraudulent item removed from your credit report.
• File a police report and get the report number assigned to your ID theft case.
• Keep a chronological log of all events, contacts, notifications, and other steps you have taken until all credit issues have been resolved.
